SPAES has recently completed the design and manufacturing of five medical racks in a MD 902 helicopters for Heli Austria.
These MD 902 helicopters are vital for HEMS missions and have been upgraded to include additional medical equipment, such as three essential units, two storage bags, and two oxygen bottles.
The medical rack is placed in the passenger compartment between two rear facing seats and oriented against the flight direction. It securely holds a Defigard Touch 7 unit, a WEINMANN MEDUMAT Standard unit, and a BOSCAROL BSU212 OB 10000 FM MSU unit. This setup ensures that critical medical devices are easily accessible during flights. It offers flexible configuration options that allows for a variable arrangement of devices to meet specific operational needs.
The project began with receiving precise dimensions and requirements from Heli Austria. SPAES then created a preliminary design, which was followed by the construction of a mockup using aluminum, Styrofoam, and 3D-printed parts. This mockup was tested directly in the helicopter to ensure fit and functionality. Based on feedback from the customer, the design was refined, and the final version was produced. The first rack was assembled and tested on-site with the customer, allowing for minor adjustments before the remaining four racks were constructed. Each rack underwent functionality testing to ensure that every mount and unit performed as expected before the final delivery to Heli Austria.
The rack is designed to be both robust and adaptable. The adjustable length ensures a customizable fit for ceiling attachment. The project was completed within SPAES’ own EASA Part 21J Design Organization and its own EASA Part 21G Production Organization.
